My family totem is Shumba; the Lion.
Growing up in Zimbabwe, I didn't fully appreciate what my Shumba totem meant until I grew older. What I knew was that it connected me to my father, my ancestors, and a family story that began long before I was born.
In our tradition, we inherit our father's totem. My mother's totem is Chirandu, and because of my deep love and respect for her heritage, I created the Chirandu Mamoyo design in her honour.
As I grew older, I realised something beautiful.
Although my totem came from my father, I have also been deeply shaped by my mother's love, wisdom, and legacy.
That is one of the reasons Sister Style means so much to me.
It isn't simply about creating clothing.
It's about preserving stories.
It's about celebrating the heritage we've inherited while honouring the people who helped shape our lives.
That is the heart behind the Shumba Collection.
What Is a Totem?
In Zimbabwe, totems (mitupo in Shona, izibongo or isitemo in Ndebele) are a deeply rooted system of ancestral identification, social structure, and personal pride.
Passed down patrilineally (from father to child), a totem connects a person to a specific ancestral clan and lineage.
For many Zimbabweans, a totem is much more than ancestry. It represents belonging, responsibility, respect, and identity. It reminds us that our story did not begin with us, it is part of a much bigger story passed from generation to generation.
For centuries, totems have helped preserve family history, strengthen relationships between clans, and ensure that cultural traditions continue to be remembered and respected.
In a rapidly changing world, they remain a powerful reminder of who we are and where we come from.
The Spirit of the Shumba
Across generations, the lion has been admired for its courage, strength, leadership, confidence, and resilience.
These noble qualities have long been associated with the Shumba totem, known as Sibanda in Ndebele and continue to inspire families today.
For me, carrying the Shumba totem isn't about claiming superiority over anyone else.
It is about remembering where I come from and striving to live every day with courage, integrity, humility, and responsibility.
Our heritage is not something to hide.
It is something to honour.
One Heritage, Two Expressions
When I created the Shumba Collection, I wanted to celebrate our heritage in a way that speaks to both men and women while remaining true to the same story.
The men's Shumba design features a bold lion that symbolizes courage, strength, protection, and leadership. Surrounded by African-inspired geometric patterns, it reflects the confidence and responsibility associated with carrying the Shumba name.
The women's Shumba design presents the same heritage through a different artistic expression. Featuring the elegant profile of a lioness with a beautifully patterned mane, it celebrates grace, wisdom, dignity, and quiet strength.
Although the artwork is different, the message remains the same.
One heritage.
One identity.

Today's world moves quickly.
Many Zimbabweans now live in different parts of Africa and across the world. As generations grow up away from home, it becomes easier for cultural traditions and family stories to fade.
I believe preserving these stories matters.
When we understand our heritage, we gain a deeper appreciation for those who came before us, the sacrifices they made, and the values they passed down.
Celebrating our culture doesn't mean living in the past.
It means carrying our identity with confidence wherever life takes us.

When I designed the Shumba Collection for Sister Style, my goal wasn't simply to create another graphic T-shirt.
I wanted to create a wearable conversation starter.
A piece that allows Zimbabweans, whether at home or in the diaspora, to proudly celebrate their heritage.
