How God Remembers Us: Never Forgotten, Forever Engraved

Can you imagine the hand of God, with every name etched into the palms of His hands?

Is that even possible?

When I read Isaiah 49:16, I find myself wondering about this picture. Of course, Scripture is using a powerful metaphor to help us understand something about the heart of God—how He sees us, how He knows us, and how He remembers us.

“See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are ever before me.” — Isaiah 49:16

The picture of being engraved is what caught my attention.

Because something that is engraved isn’t something that can easily be rubbed away or erased. It has been marked deeply.

And that is what gives me peace.

How ENGRAVED Came to Me

I actually came across this verse while I was working on my Father’s Day collection for Sister Style.

I had all these ideas flowing, and I wanted this collection to be about celebrating my Supernatural Father—God.

I wanted to honour Him as my Father and create something that reflected who He is to me.

But as I was working through the ideas, ENGRAVED began to take on a meaning that was much more personal than I expected.

Isaiah 49:16 kept bringing me back to this thought:

God remembers me.

Not just when I’m doing well. Not just when my faith is strong. Not just when I feel like I have everything together.

He remembers me all the time.

And honestly, I need that reminder.

There are days when I struggle with anxiety. There are days when I feel low. There are days when my faith feels strong and I feel so close to God, and then there are other days when my faith feels like it is at an all-time low.

I make mistakes. I get things wrong. Sometimes I question myself and wonder if I’m even doing what God has called me to do.

But through all of that, this Scripture gives me peace.

Because God doesn’t forget me when I am struggling. He doesn’t erase my name because I made a mistake. He doesn’t remove me from His hands because my faith isn’t perfect.

My feelings change. My circumstances change. My faith can rise and fall.

But God doesn’t change.

And that is where the word engraved became so meaningful to me.

What Does “Engraved” Mean?

The Hebrew word behind “engraved” in Isaiah 49:16 comes from the root חָקַק — ḥāqaq.

The word carries the idea of cutting in, carving, engraving, or inscribing. It can also be used in the sense of something being decreed or established. In Isaiah 49:16, the form חַקֹּתִיךְ (ḥaq-qō-tîkh) is translated “I have inscribed you” or “I have engraved you.”

That gives me such a beautiful picture. This isn’t something written lightly and easily rubbed away. It is the picture of something deeply marked. Something that has been deliberately inscribed.

And when God says:

“I have engraved you on the palms of my hands,”

He is reassuring Zion that she is not forgotten. The verse continues by saying that her walls are continually before Him—her restoration and situation remain in His sight.

That is what makes this Scripture so powerful to me. God remembers.

Imagine His Hands

Sometimes I imagine what it would look like if I could actually see God’s hands.

The Creator of heaven and earth. The One who knows every person He has created.

And I think: How many names are there? Can you imagine?

Every person He created. Every person He knows. Every person He loves.

And Isaiah gives us this beautiful picture of God saying that His people are engraved on His hands.

I don’t take that as a literal picture of physical names carved into God’s hands. It is a powerful way Scripture helps us understand the permanence of God’s remembrance and His care for His people.

But I still love imagining it.

What if I could see His hands? What if I could see my name? What if I could see yours?

The thought humbles me. Because sometimes I feel like I am just one person trying to figure life out. But God sees me. He knows me. He remembers me. I am not an afterthought.

When My Faith Feels Low

This is probably one of the most personal parts of ENGRAVED for me.

Because sometimes we talk about faith as though we are supposed to feel strong all the time. But that isn’t my reality.

Some days my faith is high. Some days I feel close to God and full of hope. And some days, honestly, I struggle.

Some days I feel anxious. Some days I feel low. Some days I question things. Some days my faith feels like it is at an all-time low.

But Isaiah 49:16 reminds me that God’s faithfulness isn’t dependent on the strength of my feelings.

I may forget. I may struggle. I may fall. But He remembers.

That doesn’t mean I stop seeking Him or stop trusting Him. It means I can come to Him honestly, even on the days when I don’t have the strength I wish I had.

And maybe that’s part of what makes this verse so beautiful.

God knows me completely. He knows the strong version of me. He knows the struggling version of me. And He hasn’t forgotten either one.

What ENGRAVED Means to Me

What started as an idea for a Father’s Day collection became a personal reminder from God.

I wanted to celebrate my Supernatural Father. But in the process, I was reminded of something about myself:

I am His daughter, and He has not forgotten me.

ENGRAVED isn’t about pretending that life is perfect. It isn’t about pretending that I never struggle. It isn’t about having perfect faith every single day.

It is about remembering who God is when I don’t feel strong. It is about remembering that my mistakes don’t erase me.

My difficult seasons don’t erase me. My anxiety doesn’t erase me. My questions don’t erase me. My low moments don’t erase me.

My name is not erased from His hands.

I am seen. I am known. I am loved. I am remembered.

Never erased.
Forever engraved.

God has not forgotten you. Your story isn’t finished. Your difficult season doesn’t define your identity. And even when your faith feels weak, you can still reach for the One whose faithfulness never changes.
